ABOUT FISKARS VILLAGE AiR
As one of the oldest ironworks in Finland, international exchange and community engagement has always played a natural part in Fiskars Village. Today the village hosts hundreds of Artisans, Designers and Artists forming a unique, vivid community of creative professionals. Formed in 1996, the Cooperative of Artisans, Designers and Artists in Fiskars' arranges international, high-quality exhibitions in Fiskars all year-round presenting crafts, design and art. Numerous nationally noticed events such as the antique, wood, slow food and knife happening are also arranged in the village. Our mission is to stimulate the professional exchange and networking between creative professionals in Fiskars Village and overseas. The village surroundings is characterized by an exceptionally rich flora, many peaceful lakes and ample forests. Fiskars nature serves as an endless and accumulating source of inspiration for both local and visiting artists.
Fiskars AiR offers fully furnished apartments with private kitchen, bathroom and work space in a traditional Scandinavian-style house in the heart of Fiskars Village. The residency is mainly self directed with one-month summer periods for research and social networking and two-month winter periods for in depth research and production. The residency house will be undergoing renovation work during year 2015. This will cause some changes in the usual periodical thinking and applicants for 2015 are welcomed to apply for one or two month periods throughout the year. The renovations will not affect the living/working conditions in the apartments while they are in use by the residents.
The residence is open to professionals from all creative businesses, nationalities and ages. This includes working craftspeople, designers, visual artists, architects, industrial designers, performing artists, composers, musicians, curators, producers, journalists, writers and researchers. We like to prioritize international guests however Finnish artists may be considered. Families and work groups are also welcome to apply. It is our wish that the visitor donates an art piece or product to the AiR collection at the end of his/her residency. The next application deadline for residencies during 2015 will be 31st October 2014. Please check under Application for instructions on applying.
Quoting former AiRs:
I felt more at home in Fiskars than I have in my home country for some time. There seems to be a real support for each others creative outputs here, and people band together for the village. I found everyone warm, welcoming and wonderful.
Conducive and peaceful environment. Beautiful frozen lakes and forests. A time to step back. Fresh inspiration.
The lovely studio, unbroken time and forest explorations were the most important things I found in Fiskars. I enjoyed the solitude of the residency which taught me a lot about myself, how I travel and form ideas for my work.
I think back of Fiskars very often as a safehaven for stressful days. Beautiful place, fantastic people. Rewarding both professionally (concentration) and personally (humbling experience).
I loved being surrounded by so many different artists and learnt to appreciate art disciplines that I am rarely exposed to in normal life.
Very nice people, open, curious, funny, intelligent, helpful. I wish we could visit again just for a pulla and a great coffee.
The time in Fiskars allowed me to see things in myself that i normally don't notice during the hectic routine in the city. Also being so close to nature was a profound experience.
My time in Fiskars was one of my most inspiring periods as an artist. The encounter with the Nordic landscape for the first time, brought about a new direction and clarity in my work, that still continues on till today. The residency space in Fiskars, along with nature walks in the surrounding area also allowed time for reflection and renewed thoughts and ideas. The studio space was also ideal for working on big paintings, allowing for a very productive time.
I met a lot of great people who I am still in touch with. Since I knew I was only there a short time, I made a point to let people know I wanted to meet them and see their studios and was so happy to receive many invitations.
